How the ferag.skysort.compact vertical sorter works
ferag.skysort.compact uses the proven denisort tilt-tray principle in a compact, modular format. Items are placed on individual trays — either manually or automatically — which travel along the sorter and tilt at the correct discharge point, gently releasing items into chutes, karts, boxes, containers, or Eurotainers.
The system offers two layout configurations: trays running inside (for manual loading in tight spaces) or trays running outside (for automated loading with higher throughput). Both configurations use the same core technology and can be adapted to site conditions without structural modifications.
Identification runs via barcode, 2D code, RFID, or OCR — and the system supports both WMS-directed sorting and local sortation from a definition file or blind sortation mode.
The system handles sortation wherever high throughput, product variety, and limited floor space are the key requirements:
- Sorting for dispatch, returns, incoming goods, and cross-docking
- Restmail and CEP sortation
- E-commerce, retail, B2B, and 3PL fulfilment
- All packaging types, materials, and shapes including bulky, light, round, and sensitive products
- Extension of existing sortation capacity for peak periods and seasonal demand
- High sorting performance on smallest footprint. Up to 8,640 trays per hour in a layout that fits where conventional sorters cannot.
- Total configuration freedom. Trays running inside or outside, manual or automated loading — fully adaptable to site conditions and operational preferences.
- Short installation and commissioning time. Modular design and simple mechanical assembly reduce time-to-operation significantly compared to large fixed-installation sorters.
- Processes all product types. Bulky, light, round, and sensitive items — including all packaging shapes and materials.
- Simple connection to higher-level systems. Standard WMS, WCS, and peripheral interfaces with support for local and blind sortation modes.
- Ergonomic workplaces. Designed for comfortable manual loading positions with clear operator visibility.
- Proven denisort technology. Built on the same reliable tilt-tray principle as ferag.skysort — with decades of field experience.
- Automated or manual loading of trays
- Identification by barcode, 2D-code, RFID and OCR
- Chutes for gentle sorting into karts, boxes, containers, Eurotainers etc.
- Interfaces to WMS, WCS and peripheral systems
- Local sortation from definition file and blind sortation

Why system integrators specify ferag.skysort.compact
Solution architects choose ferag.skysort.compact when a project needs high-throughput sortation without the footprint, lead time, or investment of a full-scale sorter installation.
Maximum output on minimum space. At up to 8,640 trays per hour, the compact tilt-tray sorter delivers performance that competes with much larger systems — in a fraction of the floor space. For integrators designing fulfilment centers with constrained layouts, this directly expands what is achievable per square metre.
Fast deployment reduces project risk. Short installation and commissioning times mean the system can be operational faster than conventional sorter projects. This is particularly valuable for operators facing seasonal peaks or expanding existing facilities without extended shutdown windows.
Handles everything conventional sorters struggle with. Bulky, light, round, and sensitive items that cause problems on belt or cross-belt systems are processed reliably on the tilt-tray principle. This broadens the addressable use case for integrators serving mixed-SKU environments.
Expandable without system replacement. ferag.skysort.compact’s modular architecture allows additional capacity to be added as volumes grow. Integrators can propose a phased investment approach — starting compact and scaling as the end customer’s business demands increase.
Built on proven field technology. The system uses the same tilt-tray principle as ferag.skysort, with decades of proven performance across e-commerce, CEP, retail, and 3PL operations worldwide.

A compact tilt-tray sorter is a modular vertical sortation system where items are placed on individual trays that tilt automatically at the correct destination point to discharge items gently into chutes, containers, or karts. ferag.skysort.compact achieves up to 8,640 trays per hour in a minimal footprint — processing items up to 12 kg including all packaging types, shapes, and materials.
ferag.skysort.compact is a standalone, space-saving sorter optimized for high throughput and fast installation — ideal for CEP, e-commerce, returns, and capacity extensions. ferag.skysort is a full-scale tilt-tray sorter system designed for large installations with heavier items (up to 30 kg), larger tray formats, and multi-level 3D routing. Both use the same tilt-tray principle and can be combined in the same facility.
ferag.skysort.compact is designed for fast installation and commissioning. Its modular, pre-assembled design significantly reduces time-to-operation compared to conventional sorter installations — making it suitable for projects with tight timelines, seasonal capacity requirements, or phased expansion plans.
The system processes all packaging types, materials, and shapes — including bulky, light, round, and sensitive products up to 12 kg. This makes it particularly effective in mixed-SKU environments where conventional belt or cross-belt sorters struggle with product variety.
Yes. ferag.skysort.compact is specifically designed for capacity extension. It can be added to existing sortation systems as a standalone unit, connecting via standard WMS and WCS interfaces. This makes it particularly useful for operators facing seasonal demand peaks or growing volumes without space for a full sorter replacement.
ferag.denisort.compact has been renamed ferag.skysort.compact. The technology, specifications, and performance characteristics remain unchanged. The new name reflects Ferag’s unified product naming architecture under the “sky” brand family.
