Project challenge
- Automating the handling of used cardboard boxes
- Handling a wide range of cardboard box sizes
- Dropping boxes directly into the press container
- Ergonomic workstations for staff
- Guaranteed process reliability, shift after shift
The ferag.skymove solution
Ferag replaced manual box handling with two ferag.skymove conveyors, each running the length of the incoming-goods area at Brieselang. The conveyor sits above head height, so staff simply toss boxes upward instead of walking them to a central point. A low-power 1.6 kW motor drives each 410-metre line, keeping energy costs down even at full length. Because the layout could not be redesigned around the existing worktables, Ferag engineered the drop height and conveyor path around the workstations already in place, rather than the other way around.
Results
Two ferag.skymove lines now clear used cardboard automatically across four processing stations, freeing staff from carrying boxes to a central disposal point. The 2.3-metre drop height keeps the workflow ergonomic during long shifts, and the low-power motors keep operating costs modest for a system running around the clock. The same cardboard disposal conveyor for returns processing that works for Zalando’s fashion returns adapts just as well to other high-volume incoming-goods operations.
